In the age of Pinterest and YouTube, how-tos and DIYs have become the norm. However, when brainstorming for the idea behind our own how-to video, my partner and I didn’t want to take a literal approach. Instead, we combined our skills and shared enthusiasm for Laika’s animation Coraline to form a motion graphic on, “How to Welcome Your Other Daughter Home.”

In true Coraline fashion, we were fully committed to exploring (and using) stop motion animation in our video. Following the scene that inspired our idea, we got to cooking the iconic dinner from the film and capturing it one frame at a time. Post-production consisted of combining the footage of stop motion animation and video, layering illustrations and typography, and adding effects. Colors, audio, and typefaces were intentionally chosen to complement the eerie fantasy look and feel of Coraline.
